Some shooters start with a 5-10 grain load of real black powder and then some Pyrodex over that. Sounds like a lot of fussing and won't solve your problem. Set the flint up properly the take the firearm to into a dark room no light. With no powder in the gun Trigger the action while observing for sparks. Assuming the flint is being held tightly so it doesn't move when it strikes the frizzen. Bending the arm on the sear has it's risks. I use Barricade- formerly marketed as Sheath- for rust protection after cleaning with kitchen tap hot water and dish soap to clean barrel and lock. A cleaning patch is dampened well with Barricade, and rubbed all over the lock and exterior metal parts of the rifle.Powder charge. Nitro (hard) card. Shotload. Thin overshot card. Full fiber cushion wad*. *The cushion wad needs to be SATURATED (the wetter and heavier, the better) with oil. I like to use olive oil. The load seems to shine best when used in cylinder bored guns. I started out muzzleloading with an inline (sorry) last year. did not take me long to decide I wanted an sidelock. got a deal on an tc new englander. so I took my birthday money and bought it. first range session with it was very short. 3 or 4 shots. then rain started.I did get a chance to physically hold a Pedersoli Blue Ridge in a 50 caliber, flintlock, this past Saturday. It was a very used one, at a local gun shop and priced within $70 of a new one. My second choice would be a Lyman Great Plains rifle, in a 50 caliber, percussion....but I'd prefer the long rifle.Phoenix, AZ. Jan 13, 2017. #14. Sep 2, 2016. #2. As I understand it you are supposed to set the back trigger, turn the adjustment screw in until the set trigger releases then back the screw off one full turn. The ones from RMC work great and are a cinch to install. I liked them so well that I custom fitted a set to my Isacc Haines flintlock for deer hunting.Over time, esp. with heavy use, the brass will kind of "stretch" a bit, loosen up somewhat. The steel costs a bit more, but will last forever if cared for. I saw a brass 1851 in .44 cal. recently (the originals didn't come in .44!) and it looks great. Picked up a traditions .54 cal blunderbuss kit 6 months ago as my first smokepole and have had a great time developing loads. You'd be surprised how good some of the patterns are. These would likely work in another .54 smoothie or 28 gauge. Well I think I got an easy quick fix that takes 0 skill and ends in a perfect fit. Here it is. #2.Drill 5/32 hole completely through center of arbor housing. #3.Put release agent on arbor ,and everywhere on outside of barrel that could possibly get over flow compound on it.You can find the bench design online or in Chris Schwarz's book "Workbenches". Look up "Roubo" bench online. The metal vises are from Woodcraft I believe. They cost about $90 at the time (10 years ago). The rotating jaws are very useful. The leg vises on the bench are very handy and have tremendous holding power..
